The Greater Bay Area including Hong Kong, Guangzhou, Shenzhen and Foshan commands a significant worldwide position in its research and industrial capabilities, generates potential for synergy and can be a leading force in the present age of innovation. To enhance the University’s national profile and presence, and to strategically expand its research activities and opportunities, HKUST has been proactively building impactful collaborations with leading Mainland institutions. HKUST’s three Mainland platforms in Guangzhou, Shenzhen and Foshan also serve as a vital force to advance innovation and knowledge transfer activities in the Greater Bay Area.

  • Guangzhou

    HKUST Fok Ying Tung Research Institute (FYTRI)

    Hong Kong University of Science and Technology Fok Ying Tung Research Institute (abbreviated as FYTRI) , funded by Fok Ying Tung Foundation, was established in Nansha, Guangzhou in January 2007, which was the first and the only foreign research institute in Nansha. Relying on the world-leading research and education advantages of HKUST, FYTRI concentrate on innovative science and technology research and development, achievement transformation, high-end scientific and technical personnel developing, to promote the development of mainland economy.

    HKUST Shenzhen Research Institute (SRI)

    The HKUST Shenzhen Research Institute (SRI) plays a vital role in coordinating University’s innovation and technology advancement efforts among the Mainland platforms. Based on outstanding talents, research conditions and business incubation, especially the close relationship with industries in Shenzhen, IRE Building develops into a prominent research & education base and local liaison platform in Mainland, pushing regional economic growth and technological advancement and fostering knowledge exchange between Hong Kong and the Mainland.

  • Foshan

    HKUST LED-FPD Technology R&D Center at Foshan

    HKUST LED-FPD Technology R&D Center at Foshan is an institutional organization co-initiated by HKUST and Nanhai District Government of Foshan City. The lab facilities of the Center are certified by CNAS (China National Accreditation Service for Conformity Assessment). Our main business consists of development and transfer of solid-state lighting and display technologies for relevant industrial partners. The Center also provides technical services such as product characterization and testing, reliability assessment and failure analysis, product safety evaluation and technical staff training.

Mainland Strategic Partnerships

  • Shenzhen-Hong Kong Innovation Research Institute for Brain Science

    The Institute provides a platform to foster Hong Kong and Mainland collaboration in brain sciences and contribute to the public health and social and economic development in the Greater Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Bay Area. The Institute is a partnership between the region’s premier biomedical institutes, including HKUST, the Shenzhen Institutes of Advanced Technology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (SIAT), Southern University of Science and Technology, Shenzhen University, Peking University Shenzhen Graduate School, The University of Hong Kong, City University of Hong Kong and The Chinese University of Hong Kong.

  • SUSTech-HKUST Joint School of Microelectronics

    In 2018, HKUST signed a framework agreement with the Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech) in Shenzhen to plan the establishment of the SUSTech-HKUST Joint School of Microelectronics. The proposed Joint School is set to become a multilateral collaborative platform for industry, academia and research at the national level, facilitating both nurturing of market-desired high-caliber talents and innovative research in key strategic areas including integrated circuit (IC), system-on-chip design for communications, artificial intelligence and robotics, as well as next generation microelectronics device technology such as wide bandgap semiconductors.

  • UCAS

    In 2018, HKUST established a strategic partnership with the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences (UCAS) with the shared goal of jointly advancing research. Both prominent research and teaching institutions, the strategic partnership will help to advance research, talent development and knowledge transfer.

  • SCUT – HKUST Joint Research Lab

    HKUST and the South China University of Technology (SCUT) have collaborated to set up the SCUT – HKUST Joint Research Lab in 2012, to further explore potential innovative applications of aggregation-induced emission (AIE) materials in organic/polymer optoelectronic devices, organic lasers and biosensors. The partnership is synergistic as it leverages the strengths of both universities: HKUST’s expertise in AIE materials and SCUT’s state-of-the-art materials synthesis and device fabrication facilities.
